Lambeth Vanguard (NHS)

Lambeth, like many urban areas, has experienced challenges related to violence, gang-related activity and the exploitation of young people. These are often intertwined with social, economic and racial inequalities, combining to have a significant impact on the health of well-being of affected individuals, particularly young Black men and boys.

One of the key principles of the Lambeth Vanguard was to ensure that all agencies involved in a young person’s care (schools, social services and mental health services etc.) are working collaboratively, guided by trauma-informed approaches. Another principle was to address the root causes of violence and exploitation, like educational support and reducing risk factors, for successful long-term prevention.

Programs like restorative justice and support for families were identified as key for this project which encouraged multi-agency collaboration, alongside violence reduction strategies. These included interventions by youth outreach workers and engaging former gang members and community role models in mentorship programs. Providing access to mental health services, counselling and therapy was a vital component of the Vanguard approach, as well as involving local leaders, parents and young people in co-designing sustainable interventions.
