While we know that mental ill health and trauma are large contributors to gang violence in Lambeth, we also believe that housing has been a common issue among young people who have been harmed or have harmed others through serious youth violence.
The Young People at Risk project, an accommodation-based support service, offers a holistic and trauma-informed model to respond to these needs. The service is built on the understanding that young people need to be supported to exit gang involvement by assisting them in becoming active members of their community and move on successfully to independent living.
This service involves a multi-agency approach including youth work, clinical psychology and housing. Participation of the young people is key, with expert youth workers engaging with young people to spark their interest in meaningful activities, voluntary work, recreational activities, sports-based activities and more. Additionally, support is offered to young people following their traumatic experiences, with one-to-one and group sessions available with the in-house psychology service and external mental health services. Access to education, training and employment is key with support for work placements and learning opportunities.
